Our greatest challenge is to understand and predict the consequences of human activities on the quantity, variety and distribution of life on earth and in the sea. In turn, this unnatural experiment provides a unique opportunity to test classical theory at the broadest possible scales along gradients of human impact. My overall career vision is to do “the marine science that matters” and specifically to train HQP in policy-relevant ecology. My research goal is to develop models of spatial patterns and processes, which can be used to reconstruct recent past trajectories and predict the future of global marine biodiversity.
