The birth of a new platform to bring Ecology closer to society

Using the Ecology Day as a driver, the Portuguese Ecological Society (SPECO), with the support of the European Ecological Federation (EEF), has launched a new website to promote the celebration of this day, September 14.

This new platform was designed to share all the activities promoted by partners in different countries and increase its dissemination. We welcome you to Ecology Day platform

There is a growing need to integrate initiatives scattered around the world in less but more significant and impactful events that elevate their reach. This is what Ecology Day aims to be, a day that gathers new and regular activities that connect Ecology with society and promotes it as essential for human (sustainable) development.

More and more researchers within and outside ecological associations, are becoming aware of the importance of sharing their work with everyone, either alone or through partnerships. These efforts, together with many others made by museums and science centres, environmental NGOs, municipalities, companies, among others, have now a place and time to be celebrated as one.

Officially launched by EEF after the celebration of the Ecology’s 150th anniversary in 2016, the Ecology Day has been coordinated by SPECO, in close association with EEF, since 2017. In Portugal, the Ecology Day has been endorsed with the High Patronage of the National Commission of UNESCO.

In 2019, two years later, Ecology Day reached an international scale, thanks to its celebration in the United States of America, Russia, India and Mozambique. The official setting of the date depends on the scale of the initiative, which shows an upward trend.

In 2020, and due to SARS-CoV2 pandemic, we opened the possibility of an online celebration. This enables to overcome public health limitations and reach many more people. In regions where, fortunately, the disease its decreasing its prevalence, outdoor and in-person events may also take place.

Join us in creating and sharing free activities and resources for all those who want to know more about ecology, biodiversity, climate change, and much more!

Let’ emphasize the role of ecologists on the development of solutions towards a sustainable use of natural resources.

Together we will take Ecology a step further, by bringing it closer to Society.
